Sin embargo, lo que nos interesa aquí es la historia de trasfondo que hace que estos tres clips se conviertan en una trilogía casi inexplicable.
Toda la historia está basada en un cuento corto escrito por Del James, amigo del grupo, más puntualmente de W. Axl Rose e Izzy Stradlin, con quienes convivió durante sus primeros tiempos en Los Angeles en el departamento del desaparecido West Arkeen.
Al respecto, Del James aseguró: “Guns N’ Roses fueron los primeros y únicos amigos que tuve en California.”
El cuento corto del escritor fue titulado “Without You”, y según se sabe el autor lo compuso inspirado en una discusión ocurrida entre W. Axl Rose y su ex esposa Erin Everly.
Según manifestó el autor: “Without You surgió de una noche que Axl me llamo a las 4 de la mañana cuando aún estaba viviendo con su novia, quien luego se convirtió en su esposa, Erin Everly”, y agregó: “El mundo puede suponer que una superestrella tiene todo, lujo, dinero, pero las cosas simples como el amor y las relaciones son las mas difíciles de mantener”
De allí surgió esa historia que relata el infierno vivido por un hombre que perdió a su amor por haber dado un paso en falso. La traición, el sufrimiento psicológico llevado al extremo, la desolación y la degradación del hombre ante una realidad irreversible, son los tópicos en los que gira el relato.
Pero sobre todo, existe un eje principal en el que gira toda la historia; se trata de una canción que encierra el sentido de todo el cuento y que marca desde el principio el destino trágico de los personajes.
Según Del James, esa canción: “Pone al personaje en la cima del mundo del rock, pero también es su maldición, escuchando lo que escribió sobre ella. ‘No puedo vivir con vos, pero tampoco sin vos’.”
Cuando Del James le regaló el escrito a W. Axl Rose, éste quedó fascinado con esa historia de amor truncada, donde ambos protagonistas sufren un destino que parece marcado, y entonces el cantante decidió utilizarla para contar su propia historia.
Decidieron entonces realizar una serie de videos, que finalmente conformarían la tan conocida Trilogía, en lo que se relataría la historia.
No obstante, se hace imprescindible, para comprender el mensaje de esta trilogía audiovisual, analizarla tomando como herramientas algunos parámetros de la doctrina de “Vidas Pasadas”, creencia que profesa W. Axl Rose desde principios de los 90.
Por ello, en las tres historias, que finalmente formar una sola, el aspecto visual se halla cargado de metáforas que aluden permanentemente a la reencarnación del alma y al karma transmitido de una vida a la otra.
